John Paul I’s successor chose to call himself John Paul II and was officially inaugurated on 22 October. The first Pole to head the Roman Catholic Church in 455 years declared he would lead it into the 3rd Millennium. By supporting the "Solidarity" trade union, he made a significant contribution to the overthrow of Communism. A main area of his work has been his devotion to reconciling world religions with one another.
