25.5.1895: Trial against Oscar Wilde |
 |
In a sensational trial, the Irish novelist Oscar Wilde was sentenced to two years in prison and forced to do hard labor due to his homosexual tendencies. The father of his friend Lord Douglas had reported him to the police. Wilde did not flee abroad prior to the trial, as was suspected he might do. Wilde the artist was also condemned. His plays were banned from the stage and his books were no longer published. Wildes assets were also confiscated. Following his stay in prison, he wrote the ballad of Reading gaol. Despite this, he never rediscovered his old literary form and died a broken man on November 30, 1900 in Paris. |
