16.10.1906: The Captain from Köpenick
“A one-of-a-kind incident in the history of crime”. It was with this 1906 headline that Berlin’s press played their trump card. Readers couldn’t believe their eyes when they read about a hussar play that had been staged in the town of Köpenick near the German capital. It was the tale of a crooked shoemaker who gets hold of a uniform from a junk dealer and uses it for criminal gain.
