8.6.1966: "Insulting the Audience" premieres
The Austrian Peter Handke's first play premiered in the Tower Theater in Frankfurt/Main under director Claus Peymann. In "Publikumsbeschimpfung" ("Insulting the audience"), the actors address the audience directly. Handke eliminates all barriers between stage and audience. He plays with both theatrical conventions and audience expectations, eventually deconstructing all the components of a typical play.
