Franciscan Order Recognised 1223: Franciscan Order Recognised
29.11.1223: Franciscan Order Recognised
When the rules governing monks who lived in Francis of Assisi’s community were confirmed by Pope Honorius III on this day in 1223, the community was elevated to the status of a mendicant order. The basilica built following Assisi’s death became the centre of a dispute about its grandiosity. The dispute was later resolved by Pope Gregor IX, who ruled that the cloisters did not oppose the intentions of the order’s founder. This led to a division of the order that was recognized by Pope Leo X in 1517.
