29.11.1223: Franciscan Order Recognised |
 |
When the rules governing monks who lived in Francis of Assisis community were confirmed by Pope Honorius III on this day in 1223, the community was elevated to the status of a mendicant order. The basilica built following Assisis death became the centre of a dispute about its grandiosity. The dispute was later resolved by Pope Gregor IX, who ruled that the cloisters did not oppose the intentions of the orders founder. This led to a division of the order that was recognized by Pope Leo X in 1517. |
