Queen Elizabeth II officially opened Britain’s first nuclear power station in the town of Calder Hall. The high temperature reactor uses fuel elements to generate heat which is conveyed to a steam turbine. Graphite rods are used to reduce the released neutrons to the speed necessary for maintaining the atomic chain reaction.
