15.10.1964: Breshnev becomes Communist Leader
Taking over from Nikita Krushchev, whose removal he had helped to instigate, Leonid Breshnev focused on military matters and foreign policy during his reign. He developed the self-titled Breshnev Doctrine, which granted the Soviet Union the right to military intervention if the common interests of the "Socialist brother states" were threatened by a member’s activities. It was this document which justified the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968.
