17.10.1956: First Commercial Nuclear Power Station |
 |
Queen Elizabeth II officially opened Britains first nuclear power station in the town of Calder Hall. The high temperature reactor uses fuel elements to generate heat which is conveyed to a steam turbine. Graphite rods are used to reduce the released neutrons to the speed necessary for maintaining the atomic chain reaction. |
