Neue Nationalgalerie (New national gallery) 1968: Neue Nationalgalerie (New national gallery)
15.9.1968: Neue Nationalgalerie (New national gallery)
After a three year construction period the Neue Nationalgalerie (New National Gallery) was opened in Berlin. The building was designed by the architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the director of the Dessau Bauhaus (Architect School). The Neue Nationalgalerie is subdivided between a hall on the ground floor and the Museum floor beneath it. The grid design made of steel and glass is viewed as being a magnificent work of architecture. The House was intended to accommodate the works of the old Nationalgalerie that had been taken out of stock as well as exhibits from the Galerie des Jahrhunderts (Gallery of the 20th century). Approximately 13,000 visitors followed the official opening. The first exhibition was of the Dutch painter Piet Mondrian.
