Schumann began composing when finger paralysis forced him to abandon a career as a concert pianist. His romantic pieces and orchestral works influenced many composers, such as Brahms. In 1834, he founded the "New Journal for Music." He married Clara Wieck in 1844. From 1854 onwards, he was hospitalized due to mental illness.
