His full name was Nikolaus de la Fontaine und d'Harnoncourt-Unverzagt. He began playing cello at the age of ten. After completing his studies at the Vienna Academy of Music, he was a cellist with the Vienna Symphonic Orchestra for 17 years. Harnoncourt became famous for his authentic interpretations of renaissance and baroque music on historical instruments. In the 1980s he focused on Mozart and published several works based on his research.
