The German politician and founder of the Green party, Petra Kelly, was born on this day in 1947. She studied politics at international universities, including Washington, and worked for senator Robert Kennedy among others. She founded the Green Party in 1980 and became spokeswoman in the partys first federal board. She was a parlamentarian in the German Bundestag several times from 1983 until 1990. She passionately campaigned for human rights and anti-nuclear and peace policies. In 1982 she received the Nobel Peace Prize. In October 1992 Kelly and her partner, Gert Bastian, were found dead in their home. |
