1543: Copernicus dies  
Until May 24, 1543, it was taken as certain that the earth was at the center of the universe. As set out by the Greek Ptolemaeus, people believed in a geocentric conception of the world until the age of Nicholas CopernicusÂ’ idea whereby the moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn rotated around the sun in this order.
